Colour, Freedom, Self-Expression

Abstract art is not just a language of emotion.

It is more akin to a dialogue of shapes and colours, one that transcends the boundaries of the literal.  Creating abstract art allows an artist to relish in its boundless freedom: said freedom  allows for the distortion, or even the complete removal of recognizable forms.

Through this process, artists such as myself invite the viewer into a world where colour, texture, and composition take centrestage.

Abstract art allows artists a greater level of creative freedom in our need to replicate, analyse and exhibit reality. Instead, it’s exhilarating opportunity for such artists to explore the interplay of shades and hues, to manipulate form in a way that evokes emotion without the need for concrete representation. This freedom is at the core of abstract art; it is what makes the creative process so deeply satisfying.

In the absence of familiar shapes, the mind is free to wander, to imagine, and to interpret in ways that are uniquely personal. This distortion of form is not a rejection of reality, but a celebration of its infinite possibilities. By altering shapes, one creates a sense of movement, energy, or calm.

The canvas is our playground, where our imagination runs free. The joy comes from knowing that shapes are not strictly confined by the expectations of realism, but are free to take on new meanings with each stroke of the brush.

In some cases, colour is the heartbeat of abstract art – a blend of different shades and hues, akin to the thrill of composing music. Each colour a different note; when combined with others, it creates a symphony of emotion – where deep blues melt into vibrant oranges, where subtle gradients of pink and purple create a sense of depth and mystery.

The beauty of abstract art lies in its ability to evoke feelings that are as complex and layered as the colours themselves. A splash of red might convey passion or anger, while a soft wash of green can bring a sense of tranquility. The way these colours interact on the canvas mirrors the complexity of human emotion, offering a visual language that speaks directly to the soul.

In the world of abstract art, there are no rules — only boundless possibilities of colour, form, and expression.

As an artist, I find endless fulfilment in the act of creation: in the way I can manipulate shapes, and blend colours, to express the inexpressible.

Abstract art is not just a style; it is a celebration of the human spirit, a testament to the limitless potential of creativity.
