Local artist and seasoned iconographer, Ilina Filipova's works have inspired many people abroad. Her icons adorn churches in Jerusalem, the USA, Bulgaria as well as Malta. This month, her works can be viewed at the Hilton Malta. Ilina's work includes paintings of clowns, bright sunflowers, Mediterranean scenes and a few of her original Byzantine works which cover her workspace walls.

| You don't need to be a believer to appreciate Ilina's talents; her studio isin't just full of carefully cut sculptured wood depicting various religious images of saints, Madonna's, angels and Jesus figures, but also brightly coloured paintings. |
However, it's her famous Jesus icon that gets art critics and Christians alike excited. The original icon (above) has a 22-carat border covered in floral decorations. Critics have commented on the intensity of the eyes and the strenght in his face. Owned by a private collector, it so impressed an American church group that they have blown up the icon to 8' wide and 16' high (the original is 50cm x 60cm) and it will take the centre stage for the six weeks leading up to Easter. |
| It's not everyday that a local Byzantine iconographer's work ends up in a church six thousand miles away across the seas. And more importantly this didn't come by family connections; Ilina was sought after by the group in question after they stumbled across images online of her work. |
